Unlike factory edges, the short ends of conventional drywall sheets are square and create butt joints without a recessed channel. Weight varies with thickness, dimensions and manufacturer, but a conventional 4 × 8 ft, 1/2-inch gypsum panel commonly weighs roughly 40–60 lb. Longer 4 × 12 ft sheets can weigh considerably more. Panel weight matters when planning delivery, carrying sheets through stairways and installing ceilings, where mechanical panel lifts can improve positioning and handling.
Gypsum panels are generally stored flat on a level, dry supporting surface because leaning sheets for extended periods can encourage bowing or edge damage.
